I remember the first house my parents purchased.  Up until that point, we lived with our Grandparents.  By the time the last child arrived, my parents realized they really needed more space, and probably also needed to give the older generation a break.

We landed only a few miles from our first home, on an idyllic crepe myrtle lined street.  There was an abundance of fruit trees in our neighborhood, including apple, mulberry, peach and pomegranate.  My Mom was not much of a baker, but our neighbors certainly were.  They could turn any fruit picked from their back yard into an incredible edible.  As you can imagine, we spent a lot of time with those neighbors.

My Mom much preferred savory dishes.  She set about having us girl’s build and tend to our own mini gardens.  We planted tomatoes, cucumbers and green peppers (I don’t think we knew anything about yellow or red peppers at that point).

While our garden was small, Mom managed to pickle our yield of cucumbers and provide for a year of incredibly delicious bread and butter pickles.  Our tomatoes went into our nightly salads, usually a traditional Greek Salad – our favorite!.  Over the years, as Mom became more confident in her abilities, she would make and can sauce from our home-grown tomatoes.  Finally, she would use our green peppers to prepare a stuffed pepper dish.  This was definitely not our favorite.  In fact, had we been savvy enough to realize what was in store for us, we would have found a way to sabotage those dreaded green peppers.  But, two out of three ain’t bad.

Most seasons we grow tomatoes, but every season we have fresh herbs.  I love being able to exit my deck and decide on the spot how I want to flavor my drinks, salads and dinners.  Each year I intend to do more, but I am just not quite there yet.  Maybe next year…

Redefining “Fast Food”

For me, the idea of “fast food” has shifted from the stereotypical drive-thru establishment to a new way of eating.  After all, my house often resembles a “drive-thru” with teenagers coming and going non-stop and helping themselves to whatever is in the refrigerator or pantry, as well as myself and my husband with crazy schedules where many times we pass each other driving down our street and yelling messages at each other!  Therefore, fast food in my house means, where can I get some food, FAST!  If this is the case in your life, I invite you to think healthy, which I know can be challenging when taking “fast” but this time of year, I find it just takes some creativity and openness.  Here are some suggestions:

1.  SALSA is your friend! Make a big batch of salsa when you have time, keep it on hand in the refrigerator and you can use it as a staple for a quick snack or meal.  Toss it on whole wheat tortilla with some low-fat cheese, heat it up and you’ve got a great quesadilla.  Kids will sit and eat chips and salsa all day long for a snack if you just put it out there, plus it’s so healthy they won’t even notice!  Make a salad; throw some leftover chicken on it, refried beans, salsa and BAM!  You got yourself and quick, hardy meal.  See our salsa recipes for yummy varieties like pineapple, mango, or peach salsa to “spice” things up!

2.  It’s summertime so the lighter the better.  I know many people expect one hardy meal a day, but really, this is more habit than necessity.  Especially in the summer, the winter comfort foods go out the window (I’m full of seasonal phrasing, aren’t I?) so think easy, light, fast food for your house.  Instead of meat and potatoes, why not fish (it cooks/grills up quick) and fresh vegetables?  Easy, quick and healthy!

3.  Don’t forget all that fresh fruit available.  Keep an abundance of fruit washed and cooled, sliced and ready to eat and I promise you it will disappear without you having to hear, “What can I have to snack on?”  Frozen grapes, sliced watermelon or sweet peaches can be refreshing, filling and the best “fast food” in the house.

So, let us know your new summer fast food favorites. It’s a new day!

In search of a New Fitness Routine

Summer is fast approaching and I need to ramp up my workout routine.  We have a family wedding coming up and I need to look presentable.  In need of a little inspiration, I decided to see what the celebrities are up to.  After all, they look amazing and surely they have access to the latest and greatest.  Here’s a little taste of what they are doing:

TRX Suspension – this is a form of suspension training that uses straps allowing you to use your own body weight and gravity to create a total body workout.  This product was designed by a Navy Seal for athletes, military and fitness pros.  I am none of these things, so let’s keep looking.

Barefoot Running – this is supposed to be healthier for your feet.  Not only does it sound painful, but I am reasonably sure it will mess up my pedicure.  So I will just say “no” to this one.

Ping Pong – Apparently Ping Pong clubs are popping up all over Hollywood and beyond.  In fact, there is a well-reviewed club not to far from me.  They serve fabulous pizza and craft-brewed beer.  Um…maybe I better skip this one.

Yogalosophy – this is a mix of traditional yoga mixed with toning exercises.  I am confused by this.  I have taken yoga on and off for years and I thought toning was just a natural part of the process.  How in the world does one do sun salutations or a downward dog without using ones muscles?

Piloxing – According to it’s creator, Viveca Jensen, “PILOXING uniquely mixes Pilates and boxing moves into a fat torching, muscle sculpting, core-centric interval workout, guaranteed to whip you into shape, using a class format that’s both fun and challenging”.  Frankly, it sounds a tad sadomasochistic to me.  Let’s move on.

Soul Cycling – this activity combines indoor cycling with inspirational coaching.  They are kidding, right?

Kangoo Jumps – just go on-line and look at these ridiculous things.  Enough said,

Hula Hooping – I actually love this idea.  Just can’t seem to get my hips moving enough to hold up the hoop any more.

So, I guess I am right back where I started.  Let me just lace up my shoes, grab the dog leash and head out into my neighborhood.  There are so many benefits to walking.  No club fees, I get to exchange pleasantries with my neighbors and I can even swing by my local Starbucks for a skim latte halfway through my walk.

Thinking of Mom

As I sat down to write this blog, I decided the best way to express my thoughts this Mother’s Day were through this Ted Talks presentation entitled “If I Should Have Daughter” by Sarah Kay. Please watch and enjoy.

Happy Mother’s Day to moms everywhere!
